SANTA CRUZ surfers

Sta Cruz lies North of the huge Monterey Bay by the ocean.

Past the Board Walk Fun Fair and the huge roller coaster,
Past the 1 km long pier you´ll see an old light house which holds the history of surf with its over 4m long boards.

Close to the larger than life bronze statue of the blonde surfer in boxers and NO wetsuit, the waves come from a little rocky island where the sea lions bask in the sun next to the cormorants while the lonely loon floats nearby.

The waves approach the steep cliff where the most endearing, some on their 50s!, ignore the danger protective fence and dive holding on to their boards.
Soon they´ll put on a show in sleek balance and acrobatics.

The waves progress to mid difficulty areas where a large number of surfers await or ride them till they lose momentum while the less skilled attempt to stand on the board amidst clumps of seaweeds in shallower waters nearer the shore.

The sea otter mum with its puppy joyfully rolls over and over again in the kelp oblivious to this frenzy. Another sea otter swims and dives across the bay for no obvious reason to me.

The viewers can safely follow the maneuvers from atop behind the railings and enjoy the vistas, amidst magnificent Monterrey cyprusses and equally neat sea front villas.

The show goes on till the end of the day…
